School Nurse
The Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality, age-appropriate care to children from pre-K through 12th grade. The Nurse must have the ability to provide non-judgmental, compassionate care to students and their families in a culturally responsive manner. The Nurse must be able to formulate individualized, student-centered wellness plans, while enforcing Packer health policies and prioritizing community safety and wellness. Successful candidates must possess the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and parents.
Required Skills
- Perform nursing assessment and treatment for illnesses and injuries during the school day.
Ensure all visits are documented accurately in the EMR system.
- Administers medication in compliance with school policy and NYS state regulations.
Respond promptly to emergencies and administer first aid to students/staff.
Ability to perform physical duties such as carrying an emergency bag, climbing stairs, pushing a patient in a wheelchair, and transferring a non-ambulatory patient when needed.
- Maintain health records (yearly physicals and immunization records) as well as forms relating to travel/trips, emergency care, and medication using the EMR system
Reports all suspected cases of child abuse and neglect in compliance with New York State regulations.
- Work with other nurses to ensure compliance with Packer’s Health Policies and NYC/NYS requirements
Willingness to supervise LPN on the clinical team and skilled in instructing and supervising unlicensed staff for delegated tasks.
- Maintain confidentiality while communicating essential and pertinent medical information with employees and families as necessary
- Collaborate with school counselors and psychologists in supporting students with mental health issues
- Refer families for appropriate follow-up medical care, contact families to follow up on absences and medical conditions, and partner with families and healthcare providers for ongoing medical issues.
- Attend faculty and staff meetings and provide education on health issues as needed
- Participate in the school’s emergency response planning and other responsibilities as assigned by the School Nurse Department Head.
- Be on the rotation of nurse's that travel with students on overnight trips
Position Qualifications
Registered Professional Nurse with current NYS License
- Current BLS Certification
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- Experience as a nurse working with children and adolescents
- Experience working in a school setting preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- A high degree of attention to detail, organization, and flexibility
